Toy Fair Debuts with Mega Deals

The Toy Industry Association's 110th American International Toy Fair opened its doors Sunday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.

The show continues through Wednesday with top toy creators from around the world revealing plans for the coming year.

Here are some highlights from the first day of the show:

Saban Fetes Power Rangers’ 20th

Saban Brands and its licensing partners are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Power Rangers with a slew of new products on display at booths throughout the show. Items range from those inspired by the original “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” series to merchandise for the all-new season now airing on Nickelodeon, “Power Rangers Megaforce.”

Partners showcasing Power Rangers product include Bandai America (role play action figures and builder toys), Basic Fun (key chains), Bluefin Distribution (20th anniversary collectibles imported from Bandai Japan's collectors brand Tamashii Nations), BrainStorm Products (kites), The Bridge Direct (plush), Cardinal Industries (puzzles and card games), CDI/Jakks Pacific (31-inch Megaforce Red Power Ranger), Funko (Pop! Vinyl figures), Jada Toys (radio control vehicles), Jazwares (Power Rangers-inspired electronics including Megaforce walkie talkies), Mega Brands (construction toys), Pressman Toy (games), Tech 4 Kids (items for fun in the dark such as night lights), Trends International (posters), USAopoly (20th anniversary editions of Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit).

CNE Amps Up Adventure Time

Cartoon Network Enterprises and its licensing partners showed off a range of new and expanded product lines for Adventures Time that will debut throughout the year beginning this spring.

New Adventure Time products include two new games from USAopoly–Monopoly: Adventure Time Collector’s Edition and Memory Challenge Adventure Time–this spring; Jazwares adds role play figures, comic book packs and consumer electronics to its existing line; Funko created Adventure Time Pop! series figures for Hot Topic stores across the U.S.; and new partner Briarpatch debuted Adventure Time-themed games and puzzles that will roll out throughout the year.

LEGO Brings Biggest Slate Ever

LEGO Systems unveiled its largest collection of build-and-play toys ever with 250 new products that will launch throughout the year.

Among the brands getting new or extended LEGO lines are Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Disney’s The Lone Ranger (movie is due out this April), DC Universe Super Heroes, Marvel Super Heroes, Warner Bros.’ The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and Lucafilms’ Star Wars

LEGO also showed off the toy range for its first original IP, Legends of Chima. In addition to the construction toys, the property will get digital games and an original TV series later in the year.

Bandai Launches Pac-Man Toys

Namco Bandai Games and Bandai America revealed their new line of Pac-Man toys based on the upcoming 3D animated series, “Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures.” The toy line, which includes action figures, battle spinners, a chomping plush toy and the Gooage Spewing Gigantic Pac-Man, will hit retail this fall.

“Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures” will premiere Sept. 7 on Disney XD.

Ripple Junction Extends Beyond Apparel

Ripple Junction is debuting a robust lineup of new products in wide-ranging categories, in the company’s first foray outside of apparel licensing.

Product includes toys, accessories, home goods, headwear, loungewear, footwear, outerwear, holiday items and costumes for the company’s 100-plus pop culture properties such as CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory,” Comedy Central “Workaholics” and Warner Bros.’ The Goonies.

“Toy Fair is the perfect place to debut our diverse product offerings,” says Neil Hoynes, president, Ripple Junction. “We look forward to continue developing new products for ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and all of our properties through 2013 and beyond.”

Mezco Displays Breaking Bad Collectibles

Mezco Toyz unveiled its 2013 offerings, which include collectibles for Universal Monsters, Man of Steel and Breaking Bad.

The Breaking Bad line, based on the AMC series, features ultra realistic figures and accessories of Walter White/Heisenberg as well as plush figures, bobbleheads, money clips and stash boxes. 

New offerings in the Universal Monster line include a 9-inch Creature from the Black Lagoon and Mummy.

Finally, Superman joins the company’s Mez-Itz line of designer vinyl figures in a Man of Steel range that will also include Zod and Jor El.

Wonder Forge Debuts DC Comics Games

Wonder Forge debuted its new line of DC Entertainment Justice League tabletop games, created under license from Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

The new lineup features a variety of popular DC Comics characters including Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Flash.

Among the games included in the lineup are the Justice League Axis of Villains strategy game and the Justice League Face-Off dice game, both of which will be available exclusively at Target this fall.

Om Nom Takes A Bite Out of Toy Fair

ZeptoLab revealed new product for Cut the Rope and its star character Om Nom, led by the new augmented reality app “Om Nom: Candy Flick” that brings Om Nom to life when used in conjunction with Round 5’s line of plush toys.

Round 5 products include plush, buildable play sets and collectible micro figures called Nommies. The new product will be available at Toys ‘R’ Us stores in the U.S. and Canada this March.

Additional licensees featuring new Cut the Rope products include Mega Brands Puzzles with a range of puzzles; Toy Galaxy with a novelty line of toy, game and activity products; Sakar with ear buds, headphones, cases/skins and consumer electronics; and Kellytoy with amusement toys and crane plush.

ZeptoLab is also focusing on international expansion with new licensees in the U.K., Germany, Spain, Portugal, France and Benelux (managed by ITV Studios) and Australia (managed by Haven Licensing).

Peavey Makes Walking Dead Guitars

Music manufacturer Peavey Electronics unveiled their new line of guitars and accessories featuring Skybound Entertainment’s The Walking Dead brand.

Featuring graphics from both the comic book and TV show, the new line will be available this year at specialty and major national retailers.

Talking Tom Gets Novelty Line

Outfit7 unveiled products from its new partnership with Paper House Productions–a collection of novelty items featuring its Talking Friends apps. The deal was negotiated by Beanstalk.

The collection includes 3D stickers, magnets and wall décor featuring characters from the mobile games. The line will launch at retail shortly after Toy Fair.

Yomega Spins Out Star Wars Yo-Yos

Yomega premiered its line of high performance Star Wars yo-yos.

“We know that many yo-yo enthusiasts are also avid Star Wars fans,” says Todd Rywolt, co-president, Yomega. “The Yomega team has really put a lot of passion and care into developing high performance yo-yos that would deliver upon the essence of Star Wars and appeal to both audiences.”
