MIPTV Celebrates its 50th Year

The annual international TV market MIPTV is celebrating its 50th anniversary as it opens today in Cannes, France.The annual international TV market MIPTV is celebrating its 50th anniversary as it opens today in Cannes, France.

The four-day event, organized by Reed MIDEM, will feature presentations from industry leaders, screenings of new and returning content, celebrity appearances and a showcase of new 4K television technology.

As part of its 50th anniversary theme, Screening the Future, MIPTV has partnered with Sony to offer attendees an in-depth look at the next evolution in television technology–4K ultra-high-definition. Through a series of conferences and technical presentations Sony and MIPTV aim to prepare producers for the broadcast standard of the future.

Throughout the event, top television executives will provide insight and inspiration among them Tim Hincks, president of Endemol Group, who will address global changes in the industry as part of the Media Masterminds keynote series; Darren Throop, president and chief executive officer of Entertainment One, who discuss the future of eOne’s business; and David Zaslav, president and chief executive officer of Discovery Communications, who will talk about the global content environment.

And of course, the event will be attended by a full spectrum of TV stars, including:

  • Thandie Newton, who will present eOne’s new series “Rouge,” co-produced with Greenroom Entertainment.
  • Also attending alongside eOne is rock n’ roll legend Gene Simmons.
  • David S. Goyer, co-writer of The Dark Knight trilogy and the upcoming Man of Steel, will host the world premiere of the new Starz series, “Da Vinci’s Demons,” with British actors Tom Riley, Laura Haddock, Lara Pulver and Blake Ritson.
  • Starz will also premiere the first episode of the “The White Queen,” the new series based on Philippa Gregory’s book and starring Max Irons.
