The project was chosen from LEGO’s Cuusoo global crowdsourcing platform, which lets fans submit their designs for LEGO building systems. Submissions that receive 10,000 fan votes are reviewed quarterly by the toy company and considered for production.
The Ecto-1 was selected due to its broad worldwide appeal and the fact that the iconic model lends itself to challenging and creative building for both children and adult fans. It will be produced under license from Sony Pictures Consumer Products.
The LEGO replica of Ecto-1 is currently in the final design stages and will also include mini figures. Brent Waller, a 3D environment artist in the video game industry from Brisbane, Australia, developed the concept.
This will be the sixth user-designed product to be manufactured from the LEGO Cuusoo platform. Other projects have included the NASA Mars science laboratory Curiosity rover, the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future, LEGO Minecraft Microworld, the Hayabusa asteroid explorer and the Shinkai 6500 submarine.
