Cyber Monday Signals Shifting Preferences

Online sales on Cyber Monday increased by 16 percent year-over-year to $2.29 billion, according to the Adobe Digital Index.

In fact, Cyber Monday was the fifth day in a row of record-breaking online sales over the Thanksgiving holiday, indicating a continued shift in consumer preferences toward web-based shopping.

While “brick and click” retailers dominated Thanksgiving weekend sales, pure-play Internet retailers generated the most sales on Cyber Monday with a 42 percent share.

A record 18.3 percent of sales came from mobile devices, an increase of 80 percent from last year.

“Retailers earned 10 percent of their holiday sales in just the last five days, an increase of 26 percent year-over-year,” says Tamara Gaffney, principal analyst, Adobe Digital Index, Adobe. “Sales from mobile devices saw the biggest gains with an 80 percent increase over last year.”
