The U.K.'s Institute of Contemporary Arts and Polka Children’s Theater are planning a series of special events, shows and readings to celebrate the 100th birthday of Moomin creator Tove Jansson.
The events will culminate in Moomin Summer Fun at Covent Garden in London on Aug. 9-10, during Jansson's birthday weekend.
Children’s writer and lifelong Moomin fan Philip Ardagh will read excerpts from of his favorite Moomin books to a live audience. Acclaimed children’s entertainer Benny Törnroos will also make a special appearance during the weekend.
Other activities scheduled for Moomin Summer Fun include a Moomin puppet performance, songs from the Polka Theater’s Moomin Summer Madness show, face painting and character appearances by the Moomins themselves.
The Tove Jansson anniversary celebrations began in the U.K. in May with a seminar in Courtauld. This month, the ICA is featuring an exhibition of rare photographs and material relating to Jansson’s life and work (Jansson passed away in 2001).
Jansson, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday during Moomin Summer Fun weekend, is most famous for her work on the celebrated animated series, but also achieved international success that made her one of the most well-known Finnish artists in the world.
